The Hôtel Dieu and the Hospices de Beaune

This charitable institution was created in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salin, who sought to buy their salvation by establishing a hospital for the poor.

Open to the public, this architectural gem houses a collection of some 5 000 items, including the Beaune Altarpiece, a large panel painting also known as The Last Judgement, a unique and world-famous masterpiece by Rogier van der Weyden.

Some 2 500 pieces of furniture (beds, trunks, etc.) and other items (tapestries, paintings, sculptures, apothecary jars, etc.) feature on the Burgundy General Inventory of Cultural Heritage.

Open all year round.
